If I can do it, so can YOU!
If you’ve spent even a little amount of time surfing the Internet, then I’m sure you’ve seen some stunning websites, some pretty good websites, and even websites designed by people whose own mothers wouldn’t claim affiliation to the designer. The sad part is that if these budding designers just spent a little time learning the basics of good layout and website design, then their work would see great improvement (and their mothers would be proud.)
Many people — maybe even you — believe that the only way to become better at website design is to get a degree in design from a university or a design school. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
And I’m proof of that…
My journey to “design competency”
I first got hooked on surfing the Internet back in 1995. More than just wanting to see what the World Wide Web had to offer, I wanted to be one of the members who created the fantastic websites that I saw. Unfortunately, I had just graduated from college with a degree in music performance and composition. But I didn’t let that stop me.
I bought books on design, layout, and website design. I visited numerous blogs and websites to read the tutorials there. And I practiced my new-found hobby at every free moment. And as time went by, my designs got better and better with no teacher looking over my shoulder to scrutinize the placement of every pixel.
Now it’s my turn – and you benefit from it!
Having learned so much about website design from the thousands of generous people across the Internet, I decided that it was my turn to give back to the community. But with so many great blogs and sites already out there, I wasn’t quite sure how. And that’s when I came up with Newbie Website Design.
The Internet does abound with great sites on design, but most of them are for people who already have learned the basics. So the obvious choice for me was to teach others the fundamentals of good website design. With the basics under your belt, you can then go on to build great websites all without the need for a degree.
Now sit back. Relax. Grab a cup o’ coffee (or your favorite stimulating beverage) and let me help you master the exciting world of website design!
Afterword – Who am I?
My name is David Radtke. I’m a self-taught website designer (this blog being an example of my abilities) and now run my own design and Internet consulting business that you can find at www.DavidRadtke.com.
I’m originally from the state of Michigan in the United States of America. I graduated from Wayne State University in 1995 with a triple major in music composition, music theory, and jazz studies.
After that much college study, I left the great state of Michigan to go on a one-year working holiday in Japan. Now (to most people’s surprise) I still live and work in Japan with my wonderful Japanese wife and two very energetic kids.
