The Internet is filled with way too many technical terms and other high-tech jargon. It’s no wonder, then, that newbies get confused.
So it’s time to roll up my sleeves and begin to clear up some of the Internet jargon that baffles – rightfully so – the countless newcomers (and even the veterans) who are making their way through the World Wide Web.
In this post you’ll learn about:
- What is a domain name?
- What is a web address?
- What is a URL?
- What is the meaning of URL?

You may have heard of Facebook, or maybe even Stumble Upon. Possibly the name “Technorati” floated within your aural range as well. Then someone told you about social bookmarking websites – and the only things you can think of are:
- What IS Facebook?
- What IS Stumble Upon?
- What IS Technorati? AND…
- What IS a social bookmarking website?
They are all good questions. Here are the good answers:

Back in the day when I first became interested in Internet marketing I stumbled across Rosalind Gardner. I purchased her e-book, The Super Affiliate Handbook, just to see if what she was teaching could actually be done. At the time I figured it would be wasted money — you know, another overly hyped-up e-book on how to earn a living on the Internet.
Three years later I’m still thanking my lucky stars that I bought her e-book. And to this day I still follow all of her new materials as well. Her e-book, more than almost any other, is responsible for my current online success.
While viewing some of her YouTube videos today I came across one that rang true for me. You see, there are many scam artists out there on the World Wide Web that use Photoshop to fake the “proof of earnings” images you see on their websites. Maybe they actually only earn $100 a month. But with a little bit of editing they can make it look like they earn hundreds of thousands of dollars a month. (Sneaky little cheaters!)
The video made by Rosalind Gardner is an actual, real-time tour through some of her accounts. You can see her earnings in their complete, unedited glory. What is even more impressive is that this video was made a few years ago… so one can only imagine what she is making now through Internet marketing.
Here’s that video for your enjoyment:

I’ve seen a few of my friends and family members do this… and it’s wrong, wrong, wrong.
Don’t double click on links.
Now, I can understand how the rapid double-tap of your index finger could become such a habit that it even carries over into the world of the Internet. But don’t stress-out your delicate finger with unnecessary motion. Links only need a single click.
And besides…
Double-clicking an order link on an online shopping cart MIGHT charge your credit card twice!

While surfing one day, I came across this very cool website effect using something called CSS (Cascading Style Sheets – a techie term used in website design.)
Now, this cool effect only works when you manually resize your browser window (meaning that most people won’t even know that it’s there while casually surfing around) but it is still worth checking out!
To view:
Click on any of the links below (a new browser window will open automatically.) Then resize your browser window by clicking and dragging on the lower right-hand corner of the browser window. (Note: This won’t work on all browsers! Notably, Internet Explorer 6.)
Starry Night by CSS-Tricks.
Dumago website.
Silverback website.
(One more note: I’m not promoting the products on these websites, just showing you the cool effects there.)

At the end of every post on Internet Newbies, there is a list of “little tiny icons”. These icons are a way to quickly and easily accomplish the following:

Internet forums can be a great place to learn new things about your favorite hobby, have your most burning questions answered, and make new friends with others all around the world.
But, as a member of quite a few forums, I can tell you that all is not roses and rainbows. There are “trolls”, “spammers”, and of course the normal set of weirdos, deviants, and an occasional pervert or two.
To help out, I decided to share this fantastic video I stumbled upon on how to behave on an Internet forum. (I found it one day while actually participating in one of my favorite Internet forums
)
Go ahead and click the little ‘play’ button in the lower left-hand corner of the video window to view!

It’s time to put the flow of a blog into perspective. And the best way to clear up the confusion is with an image: (Don’t try clicking on it ’cause nothing’s gonna happen
)
The right-most rectangle is the “home page” (the very first page of a website or blog.) At the top you have the most recent post. Moving down that column takes you back in time until you reach the bottom of the page.
At the bottom of every page will be a link usually titled “Older Entries” or “Previous Entries” (or variations thereof.) Clicking on that link takes you to the previous page containing older entries. Click on those “Previous Entries” long enough and you’ll get to the very first post ever written.
Now that you’ve got the gist of how blog posts flow, why not take a trip back in time through Newbie Website Designs?

In a previous post you learned exactly what a blog is, what a blog post is, and what the crazy activity called “blogging” entails. Next, it’s time to take a look at how to actually get around a blog to use one to its fullest extent.
Most of what you see from blog to blog is pretty much the same. There are only a few minor differences that really shouldn’t trip you up. Without further ado, let’s begin…
Very straight-forward… in a backwards kinda way
If you’ve followed any series articles on other blogs then you probably noticed something odd: part I of any series is listed last and the most recent article is listed first. On a regular website these articles (posts or entries as they are sometimes called) are listed in numerical order: the first article being first and the last article being last.
